How I Made Showering Safer
🚿 It’s funny how something as ordinary as taking a shower can become something you have to rethink. I’ve been in my home for five years now, and I absolutely love it. One of the biggest selling points was the primary bathroom. It’s surprisingly spacious for a rental, and it already had grab bars installed. I used to love soaking in a warm bath after a long day, especially when my legs were tired. But as my leg weakness has progressed, getting in and out of a bathtub is no longer safe for me. (Yes, bathtub lifts exist, and they’re something I’d love to look into someday!)
For now, this is the setup that works for me. I use a shower chair along with a small shower bench to prop my legs up. A few years ago, I could stand for a quick shower without thinking twice. Now, standing for too long isn’t an option, and because my legs can give out without warning, safety has to come first. After several falls over the years, I’ve learned that adapting isn’t giving up, it’s finding new ways to keep doing the things that matter.
Showering still takes planning. I have to manage my energy, choose the right time of day, and pace myself. It’s not always easy, but this setup has made a huge difference over the last couple of years. Accessibility isn’t always about big renovations. Sometimes it’s the small adaptations that help us maintain our independence. 💙 ♿️
